Now in our third year, the Casa Mariposa community has welcomed hundreds of people into our homes. Through living out our mission we have started the Restoration Project, shared support and solidarity with women and men in immigration detention, offered free weekly community meals, safe shelter, provocative films, spiritual support to activists, and have been a learning and reflection stop for hundreds of people coming from all over North America to study the border.
Your support helps us continue to offer such generous hospitality. Your support also helps us restore the earth and live sustainably. Your support helps us go above and beyond our daily needs to share our home, meals, and lives with others as we live into our mission:
If you’d like to support the Restoration Project with money, here’s what we would do with it right now:
$12 buys a bag of chicken feed for one month. Our seven chickens provide wonderful, yummy eggs that meet most of our egg needs. We compost their glorious chicken poop to add nutrients to the soil for our garden.
$45 buys a 5 lb bag of Just Coffee for one month, along with some milk and sugar to go in it. We like supporting Just Coffee and having coffee on hand at all times for guests and anyone who might stop by. And in the words of Garrison Keillor: “The thin veneer of civilization is never more apparent than when the coffee runs out.”
$50 buys groceries for a Wednesday community meal. About 30+ people usually share a homemade meal together on Wednesdays at the house. We cook with local, seasonal, produce when we can afford it. We set up several long tables in the great hall. It’s free and everyone is welcome.
$247 buys a Community Supported Agriculture farm share for the house for 13 weeks. The Tucson CSA works with area farmers to bring fresh, local, seasonal food to the lives of urban dwellers while helping small, local farmers stay in business.
$300 allows us to have a hospitality room for one month. We keep at least one open for guests from immigration detention centers when they receive asylum or are released on bond. Currently we have three hospitality rooms.
If you’d like to support the community with time or specific items we currently could use:
Personal supplies for hospitality guests: pads, chapstick, international phone cards, toothpaste, deodorant, men’s razors.
Cloth bags and sweatshirts to hand out at the greyhound station to men and women just out of immigration detention centers
A large food processor
An answering machine and phone, Thanks, Maggie!
Money to help cover rent for the house. We currently pay $1,600 a month.
A new place to call home. Casa Mariposa will move from our current location June 30, 2012. We seek a large space with multiple rooms to live, offer hospitality, and welcome groups to eat and reflect together on social justice and spirituality.
Checks can be made to: Restoration Project, Florence
